What does a TPE mat contain?
The material is called TPE. Its is a synthetic rubber that neither contains
latex,toxins, softeners/phthalates.
- TPE is a modern material and has been developed with the environment in mind
in order to replace natural rubber in many products. The chemical compositions
contain (H) hydrogen and (O) oxygen which makes TPE products decomposable. TPE
can also be recycled or burned and is an eco-logically superior material to
PVC.
- TPE is non toxic, does not cause any allergies. It is easy to recycle.
- TPE is synthetic, and natural rubber is natural why should I use a yoga
mat that is not natural!
- TPE is synthetic rubber. It can easily be melted and reused. The process
of making the TPE Mat is a careful process. Waste is recycled or reused immediately
and the energy used is less than most other similar processes. The TPE is
Oeko-Tex standard, which means it, is tested and does not cause any allergies.
Are TPE Mats decomposable?
Yes. In 10-15 years depending on the circumstances. Heat and covering gives
an effective and faster decomposition.
Are TPE mats allergy tested?
Yes. They are approved by Oeko-tex standard and does not contain phthalates,
AZO or DOP.
How do I clean my TPE mat?
A cloth and eco friendly soap. Wipe off without intensive rubbing. This method
will prolong the life of your mat but you can use a machine too.
What do yoga teachers think about TPE mats?
Almost everyone loves it. Some think it is expensive. It is not suitable for
everyday use in Ashtanga due to the repeated vinyasas. BUT some Ashtanga yogis
use TPE mats anyway because they like the grip and feel and accept that they
may require earlier replacement.
Hatha, Iyengar, Anusara, Yin, Bikram, etc yoga practitioners love TPE mats!
They last well in these practices -- assuming good care is taken of the mat.
Are TPE mats as good as PVC yoga mat?
TPE mats offer excellent grip, with a super-matte surface which prevents sliding.
It is lighter than a PVC sticky-mat, but despite the lightness it lies flat
on the floor while practising. TPE mats are recommended for individual caring
use and not suitable as a studio mat.
Are PVC mats decomposable?
No they are not. But you can reuse them. When worn out or when you are ready
to switch mats, use it for something else! PVC mats give great cushioning for
your knees when renovating or doing household work; they can offer protection
while moving furniture in your car; great for lining your car boot; use them
underneath chopping cutting boards in the kitchen. The possibilities are limitless!
