This yummy raw breakfast porridge is brimming with wholesome ingredients, including ground flax seeds, organic cacao nibs and versatile moringa powder – a delicious and incredibly filling combination that promises to keep you going until lunchtime.
Moringa powder is an exotic, nutrient-dense food that is carefully prepared from the leaves of the Moringa oleifera, a flowering tree native to the foothills of the Himalayas and cultivated in Africa, Central and South America, Sri Lanka, India, Malaysia and the Philippines. The name moringa comes from the Tamil word ‘Murugai’, however the tree is also known by a collection of other colourful names, such as the ‘horseradish tree’, the ‘drumstick tree’, ‘mother’s best friend’ and, in deference to its particularly high nutritional content, ‘the tree of life’. Almost every part of the moringa has been harnessed to its full potential - the flowers, gum, bark, roots and seeds for example, were employed in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for centuries, whilst the Romans, Greeks, and Egyptians all used moringa to protect their skin and purify their drinking water. And nowadays moringa is increasingly grown in poverty-stricken or developing nations, where it is a primary source of food and nutrition.
Indeed, moringa powder is teeming with valuable nutrients, including protein, vitamins (such as A, B1, B2, B6, B12 and C), and minerals (e.g. iron, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium). It is an extremely flexible kitchen ingredient too – try stirring moringa powder into your preferred smoothies, shakes, juices and protein drinks for example, or use it to enrich your favourite rawfood recipes, such as our satisfying raw moringa porridge below.
If you prefer a hearty start to your day, then this lush raw porridge certainly hits the spot. Suitable for vegetarians, vegans and rawfood fans, as well as all those who simply love good food!
